Is an AI receptionist worth it for a small business?
Short answer
It's worth it once calls and messages already go unanswered: after hours, mid-job, or during a rush. Forward Dawn's AI Front Desk answers instantly, offers open times from your real calendar, and logs the conversation to your CRM. It's the wrong tool where most calls need a licensed person's judgment right away, like medical triage or legal advice, or where a person already answers every call within a few rings.

What does an AI receptionist actually do?
It answers the messages that reach your business, in your voice, at any hour. Forward Dawn’s AI Front Desk handles your website chat, texts, and Facebook and Instagram messages, offers real openings from your calendar instead of a vague “we’ll call you back,” and logs the customer’s name, number and request in your CRM. Phone calls are a separate service, covered below.
What does it cost each month?
It comes with the AI Front Desk plan at $497 a month: unlimited conversations across chat, text, Facebook and Instagram under a fair-use policy. The WhatsApp Channel is $29 a month more. For your phone line, the AI Voice Receptionist add-on is $149 a month and adds AI answering plus 300 more phone-line minutes, or Growth Engine at $997 a month includes AI answering on your line (unlimited under fair use, with talk time drawn from the plan’s phone-line minutes). The pricing page has the rest.
AI receptionist or a human answering service: which is better?
The one that fixes what’s broken. A human answering service can use judgment on an odd request and puts a familiar voice on the phone, but it usually bills by the minute and can put a caller on hold when three calls land at once. An AI receptionist answers every conversation the moment it arrives, for one flat monthly price under a fair-use policy, and it never has an off day at nine at night. Where it loses is nuance: it works from the rules and the information you gave it, not years of judgment call by call. If your real problem is calls and texts going unanswered after hours, that trade favors the AI. If your real problem is complicated conversations that need a person’s read on the situation, it doesn’t.
Can it answer my real phone line, or only chat, texts and DMs?
Two separate lanes. Written conversations (website chat, texts, Facebook and Instagram DMs, WhatsApp with the add-on) are included in AI Front Desk. Answering your actual phone line is a different service: it lives in the AI Voice Receptionist add-on or comes built into Growth Engine. One doesn’t include the other by default.
What can’t it handle, and what happens then?
Before it talks to a single customer, the business owner sets the rules it works inside: what it’s allowed to offer, what it should never promise, which prices it may quote (or where it hands off to a person instead), and the moments a conversation is better finished by someone on the team. When a conversation runs past those rules, it hands off rather than guessing, and a person picks it up from there.
Does it work for a plumber, a dentist or a law firm?
For a plumber, often yes: the messages that go unanswered are the ones that arrive while you’re on a job or after you’ve closed. If someone at your business already picks up every call within a few rings, there’s nothing broken for it to fix. For a law firm, the honest use is the part that doesn’t need a license: taking a name and a callback number, booking a consultation. Anything touching legal advice is set to hand off to a person. A dental office or clinic is a different case, because a patient’s appointment can itself be protected health information, and that rules our platform out for patient calls. Either way it doesn’t replace the person answering those calls. It just catches what would otherwise go straight to voicemail.
Forward Dawn’s platform is not HIPAA compliant and we don’t sign business associate agreements, so a clinic must not put protected health information into our systems.
