How much should a small business website cost?

Short answer

Doing it yourself starts at a builder subscription: Squarespace's entry plan is $19 a month billed annually, before your own time. A freelancer or small agency build is a bigger one-time number, plus hosting after. A managed monthly plan folds the build, hosting, and ongoing changes into one price. Which is cheaper depends on whether you want a site you touch once or a site that keeps working for you.

What does it cost to build a website yourself, with a freelancer, or with an agency?

They’re three different shapes of cost. A DIY builder charges a subscription for the tool itself: Squarespace’s cheapest plan is $19 a month paid annually, or $25 paid month to month, and that’s before you spend a weekend building the thing yourself. A freelancer usually charges a flat project fee for the build, then leaves hosting and updates to you. An agency build folds strategy, design, and setup into a larger one-time or monthly figure, and what you get for it varies a lot, so get the scope in writing before you hold one quote up against another.

What do I keep paying for after the site is live?

A domain name, renewed yearly. Hosting, whether you pay for it directly or it’s bundled into a plan. And, if you want the site to stay current, someone’s time: fixing what breaks, updating photos and prices, checking that forms still work. A lot of small business sites go stale right here, not at launch, because nobody budgeted for the after.

Is paying monthly more expensive than buying a site outright?

Add up twelve months of a monthly plan against a one-time build and the monthly number is usually bigger on paper. What the one-time number leaves out is everything in the question above: hosting, fixes, and whoever handles the next round of changes when your hours or your services change. A business that wants its site changed, watched, and connected to follow-up work every month gets more for its money from a monthly plan. A business that wants a simple site it won’t touch for years usually gets better value from a one-time build or a DIY builder.

Is a redesign cheaper than starting over?

Usually, and it depends what “starting over” means. Rebuilding on the same platform with your existing content, photos, and domain is close to what a redesign costs. Moving to a new platform and rebuilding everything from nothing costs closer to a first build, because that’s what it is.

Does a site cost more for a plumber, a clinic or a law firm?

The build itself doesn’t usually change much by industry. What changes is everything around it: a clinic or a law firm may need extra care with what a site claims and how it handles patient or client information, and that review work costs more than the pages themselves. A plumber’s site is mostly about being fast, mobile-friendly, and easy to call from. A clinic or firm’s site carries more responsibility for getting the words right.

What does Forward Dawn charge, and what is included?

Every plan includes a custom website designed, built and hosted for you, plus the systems around it: a CRM, review requests, booking. Living Website is $297 a month, AI Front Desk $497, Growth Engine $997. Setup is a one-time $749, and it disappears on the annual term, which bills twelve months once for the price of ten. Month-to-month cancels any time. The website design page shows what a build looks like.
